Established in 2012, the Corner House Bistro on Athlone’s main street has become a favourite dinning choice for locals and tourists. Run by husband and wife team Joe and Linda Connolly Corner House Bistro offers customers a high quality dinning experience with a very personal touch. With a mix of casual furnishings, interesting menus and excellent service, Corner House Bistro is a must for diners with a passion for food.
Linda, after her initial education and training in Athlone Institute of Technology went on to work in Dublin and later joined the prestigious Wineport Lodge outside Athlone where she worked her way up to a position of Head Chef over a period of ten years. Her attention to detail and quality along with her passion and flair for food has seen Corner House Bistro become a favourite among locals and tourists alike.
Joe has over twenty five years experience in the catering trade both home and abroad. He believes that now more than ever, service, value and quality are what the customer should insist on and strives to make each and every visit to Corner House Bistro a memorable and affordable one.
The focus is very much on local produce and this is perfectly reflected in one of the most imaginative Irish Restaurant menus we have seen in a long time. The wine list is relatively short with just four labels on each side of the red-white divide to choose from along with a rosé and a brace of proseccos. But like the food menu, it is very obvious that a lot of thought has gone into selecting some very special easy-drinking wines for the bistro. My own personal favourite is the Stokes Tower Tempranillo-Shiraz. Light and rounded with a lovely velvet mouth feel fading to a gentle finish. Perfect for a late lunch. The staff are young, friendly, relaxed and professional. A surprise “on the house” demi-tasse mini-taster of a delicious Turnip and Maple soup is delivered to our table with a sense of fun and style by our young server.
The restaurant is a fusion of bright and modern decor with dark wood tables and well cushioned chairs. Cosy, plush and relaxing in a summery atmosphere. There are also one or two secluded corner tables – perfect for that discrete lunch time business meeting.
But it’s the food that is the real star here. Local and Irish meats, sea foods and cheeses are woven into a rich and adventurous menu which travels to the Middle East and Asia for additional flavours. Sourdough and Tracle Breads along with Brioches, Cakes and Puddings are all home baked each day, There are also extensive breakfast and afternoon tea menus that would not look out of place in any 5 Star Hotel. The only difference here is that the prices are very, very affordable.
What I liked also is that their menus and prices are listed on their website at CornerHouseBistro.ie/food/
The Corner House Bistro has set new standards for excellence in daytime dining in the Irish Lakelands and Midlands. Highly recommended for Breakfast, Lunch or Afternoon Tea if you are visiting or passing through Athlone.
